Microsuction
Microsuction is the gold standard for ear wax removal.
It involves the use of specialised, magnification loupes, a probe tube and an air suction device (at low operating pressure) to remove wax from the ear.
Using this equipment is the safest and quickest means to conveniently remove ear wax.
It is advised that wax softening drops (such as olive oil) are used for a few days prior to attending for wax removal.
Irrigation
Using a manual water pump at body temperature, water is gently squirted into your ear canal to flush the ear wax out.
The water is not directed straight at the ear drum, instead it goes around and behind the wax. This procedure loosens the softened wax, which then falls out with the water.
This is most often used when the wax is extra soft or cannot be vacuumed.
It is advised that wax softening drops (such as olive oil) are used for a few days prior to attending the appointment for wax removal.

EAR WAX REMOVAL
Ear wax removal via micro suction is considered safer than other methods such as syringing. However, irrigation, or probe removal may be undertaken if considered to be more appropriate by the clinician.
Incidents during ear wax removal are uncommon, especially with micro-suction. However, possible minor risks that can occur and are deemed to be acceptable include: small nicks to the ear canal which can result in minor bleeding, soreness, mild discomfort and short-term ringing in the ear (tinnitus). More serious risk to the ear or eardrum can occur if the client does cannot remain adequately still during the procedure.
Further possible complications, side-effects and material risks inherent in the procedure include but are not limited to the incomplete removal of ear wax requiring a return visit (for severely impacted wax), persistent tinnitus, perforation of the eardrum, hearing loss and infection. To keep the risk of infection to a minimum, all equipment used in the ear is sterilised or single-use. However, there is always a risk that infection may occur once out of the practitioner's care.
